Our format makes this page more necessary than it would be on a site that only describes events. We put the answer in the first two sentences, which is what readers want and also what makes it easy to act on. So it is worth being exact about what an answer here is.
Reporting is not professional advice
Nothing here is financial, legal, medical, tax, insurance or safety advice, and nothing here is a substitute for advice from somebody who is responsible to you. When we tell you what a recall notice covers, we are telling you what the notice says. We are not telling you your car is safe to drive to work tomorrow, because we have not seen your car.
The difference is what the adviser knows. A doctor knows your history, a solicitor knows your contract, a broker knows your circumstances. We know the document, the filing, the patch note and what the press office would confirm on the record. Those are useful things to know before you make a decision. They are not the decision.
Answers go stale faster than descriptions
We check what we publish, and our fact-checking process sets out how a claim is tested before it goes up. Good faith and a second editor are still not a warranty. We do not warrant that a story is complete, that it is current at the moment you read it, or that it fits your situation.
A story about an event stays roughly true. An answer with a deadline or an eligibility rule inside it can be wrong within days, because a manufacturer publishes a revised list of build dates or a publisher reverses a patch. We re-read what we published earlier in the day for that reason, and we date every material change. Check the date on the story, then check the primary source we linked to, especially where money or health is involved.
News, analysis and opinion are not the same page
Most of what we publish is reported news answering a question. Analysis is labelled analysis and may reach a conclusion, provided the evidence for it is in the piece. Opinion is labelled opinion and carries the name of the person whose opinion it is.
Views in an analysis or opinion piece belong to the author, not to the newsroom, and we run pieces our own editors disagree with. Those labels are not decoration. If a page is not labelled, it is reported news and is held to the sourcing rules in our editorial standards.
Links out, and material we did not make
We link out constantly, because a regulator’s notice is better read at source than paraphrased by us. Those pages belong to other people. We do not control what they publish next, we are not responsible for their accuracy or their privacy practices, and a link is not an endorsement of the organisation on the other end.
Quotes, photographs, documents and embedded posts that we did not make are used under licence, with permission, or as fair quotation with attribution, and the credit sits with the item. Embedded material can be edited or deleted by its owner, which sometimes leaves a hole in a story that we did not put there. Copyright questions go through our DMCA and copyright page.
Advertising, and any link that pays us
Advertising on this site is labelled and appears in ad units. It is chosen by advertisers and exchanges, not by editors, and it is never an endorsement of the product by us. Sponsored articles say at the top that they are paid for and name who paid, and no member of the news desk writes them.
Where a link earns us a commission, that is disclosed on the page carrying it. Commission never decides what we recommend or whether a product appears, and an affiliate link is never added to a story after publication to make it earn. The commercial rules in full, including the ad categories we refuse outright, are on our advertise with us page.
If we have got something wrong
Tell us. Send the link, the sentence, and the source for the correct version if you have one, to support@faq-ans.com with CORRECTION at the front of the subject line. You do not have to be right, and readers catch a fair share of what we miss.
Errors flagged that way get looked at the same working day where we can manage it. What changes on the page, what gets a dated note and what we do about copies that already went out is set out in our corrections policy. We correct on the story rather than quietly swapping a sentence.
What we are not liable for
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss or damage arising from anything you did, or did not do, in reliance on something published here. That includes a purchase, a claim, a cancellation, a medical decision or a legal step taken on the strength of an answer on this site.
These limits sit alongside the ones in our terms of service, and neither page removes rights you hold as a consumer that cannot be removed by contract. Questions about this page go to support@faq-ans.com, and the editors read that inbox themselves.
